NorthWestern Energy officials have told federal agencies to stop their environmental assessment work on a controversial power line, halting progress on the project for the time being.
NorthWestern has been frustrated by a process that has come no closer to completion after four years and $14 million in government studies for its Mountain States Transmission Intertie, or MSTI. The 500 kV, 430-mile transmission line, planned to help export energy from Montana to populous coastal states, was proposed to run from southwest Montana to a substation near Jerome, Idaho.
