China DC line doubles SW grid capacity

China Southern Power Grid has doubled the transmission capacity of its Yunnan-Guangdong UHV line to 5 GW, the company said last weekend.

The +/-  800 kV direct current line, the second in China, spans 1,373 km from Chuxiong in southwestern Yunnan province to Guangzhou, capital of coastal Guangdong province.

China has said it plans to spend 300 billion yuan ($43.95 billion) by 2012 on UHV power lines, fast-tracking an ambitious plan to boost trans-regional power supply capacity
